Starting Out on Boat Design

For hundreds and hundreds of years, people have been fascinated by, and drawn to, the water. By extension, the arts of building and piloting boats gained a position of prominence. While boating has, over time, changed from a major mode of transportation to more of a recreational activity, it still has a strong allure for many people. While boat design is still largely left to the professionals, and increasing number of people have taken up designing and building small-scale boats as a hobby.

Needless to say, the idea of taking up boat design may seem pretty daunting to someone who has never tried it before. In truth, all it takes to design a boat is the ability to do some simple math and understand some basic concepts of the process. Most people who are interested in boating can at least visualize how a small boat looks in their mind’s eye, and just need a few specifics to get started.

One of they key principles of boat design is to stay realistic. While you won’t necessarily be building the boat you are designing by yourself, you should design it as if you were. This ensures at every step that the boat you are designing stays grounded in reality. Once you have that in mind, the first step is to determine the approximate weight of the boat, which will be largely based on the materials used to construct it.

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to gather up the materials that you’ll be using to draw up your boat design plans. The first piece of equipment you’ll need is simply a couple of mechanical pencils. You’ll also need a ruler, as well as a longer straight edge that is somewhere between two and three feet in length, and a T-square around eight inches on a side. Finally, you’ll need cartridge paper.

Finally you must remember that decent boat design software helps you to build the boat of your dreams.
